First, we’ll begin with discussing three-tab shingles. The three-tab shingles can be distinguished by cutouts, or tabs, made along their long bottom edge. They have only one shingle tab size and shape. They are flat, constructed with less material than architectural shingles, so they actually weigh less than the architectural shingles. The three-tab shingle roofs often needs to be replaced much sooner, due to wind, rain and intense heat damage. Repairing three-tab shingles is not difficult depending where the repair need is.
The second shingle we are discussing here is a much higher end shingle called architectural shingles. These shingles are also known as dimensional or laminate style shingles. Architectural shingles have a more layered and upscale looking appearance compared to the flatter, simpler three-tab shingle. Architectural shingles have a natural cedar shake texture appearance that give a more dramatic and rich look to a home. They also have the ability to hide some roof imperfections at times because of the increased “depth” of the shingle. This of course has a potential negative side. By hiding roof imperfections, leaks can be hard to detect, and can lead to further damage to the home if annual roof inspections are not done. Many homeowners and builders prefer to use them today due to this benefit alone. Architectural shingles are nearly twice as thick as the three-tab shingles. Architectural shingles are much more wind resistant and rain and sun are not as negatively impacting to the shingle as they are on three tab shingles. Don Schmidt Roofing recommends to to its customers to consider architectural shingles over three tab shingles in Central Florida in most cases due to the harsh weather we experience in Central Florida.
